The final league event of the inaugural Powerchair league season proved to be every bit as exiting as predicted with the league title still up for grabs and league positions to be decided. The days first game saw league leaders Alba face Caledonia who were the only team who could pip them to the league title. In a hard fought game Alba sneaked a 1-0 win to clinch the trophy. Claymores had been coming into form at the previous league event and charged up the table managing to beat a deflated Caledonia team to take second place. There were great team and individual performances throughout the event which all bodes well for an exciting Scottish Cup event on 4th may Sunday's Powerchair football league event was once again full of drama as Clyde's five teams and Tayside Dynamo played out the penultimate round of fixtures as the league builds to an exciting climax. Leader Alba struggled for form as they crashed to a 3 goal defeat to a resurgent Claymores team who won all three games to move third in the table. Caledonia's win and two draws saw them close the gap at the top to four points with three games to go. Tayside Dynamo had to battle through 4 matches with only 4 players and still managed to pick up a win and a draw which keeps them in touching distance of third place. Lions with a game in hand on claymores are only 3 points behind their rivals while saltires were unlucky to come away without a point in their two matches. Sunday 30th march will see the final league fixtures take place with the title still up for grabs and all teams still able to move up the table. On Saturday the club, in partnership with the Scottish FA, hosted the first powerchair football coach education course held in the country at Chryston Community Sports Hub. The course was delivered by Ricky Stevenson and Sam Bull who represent the European Powerchair Football Association and Wheelchair Football Association who govern the sport in England. 24 coaches from Clyde PFC, Tayside Dynamo PFC, Falkirk FC, Stenhousmuir FC and Aberdeen took part learning new skills to help develop their clubs, and the sport further in Scotland.
Sunday gave the coaches a chance to put what they learned into practice with the third round of national league fixtures taking place at Ravenscraig Sports Centre. The games were once again played in an atmposhere of sportsmanship and fair play with lots of individual and team skills on show. An unprecedented number of goals were scored from set pieces highlighting the work the players have put into their hitting technique in the last month. Performances by all 6 teams competing in the league were once again of the highest order and reults proved how close the games were with 2 draws and 4 games decided by a single goal, some of which were won at the death with last minute goals and even goals scored with the last touch of the game. In addition to the league fixtures there were also 3 friendly matches played between Falkirk Fc, who were making their debut, and Tayside, Alba and Lions. The team from Falkirk played very well in their matches and will continue to particpate in friendly games over the next two rounds of fixtures before playing competitively in the Scottish Cup. With two rounds of fixtures to go and each team having to play 5 or 6 matches the league is very much up for grabs as only 9 points seperate all six teams. 2014 is set to be an even more exciting year for powerchair football with the league coming to a conclusion and new teams getting ready to compete with Clyde and Tayside for the Scottish Cup. Clyde PFC in partnership with the SFA have confirmed the first Powerchair football coach education course to be held in scotland will go ahead on 30th November at Chryston High School in North Lanarkshire. Delivered by the Wheelchair Football Association, who govern the game in England, the course will cover all technical and tactical aspects of the game. We will be looking for players to come along for a couple of hours in the morning or afternoon to assist with the course which will be a great opportunity to learn new skills from experienced coaches at international level. We hope that this course will help develop players, coaches and clubs and allow the game to progress even further The second round of the Scottish Powerchair Football league took place yesterday at Ravenscraig Sports Centre infront of a large and vocal support who provided a great atmosphere for the players to compete in.
The standard of play on show was once again very high with players and teams improving with every match played. Nine very competitive matches were played over the course of the day with all six team picking up points. The big winners, however were Clyde Saltires who took 8 points from their 3 matches following two wins and a draw which sees them shoot up the league table into joint third position. The event also saw a number of players making their debut with Matthew Adshead playing for Alba, Paul McGinlay for Caledonia, Christopher Chetty for the Claymores and a number of new faces from Tayside Dynamo all of whom were a great asset to their respective teams.
